Here we present a Short Magazine Lee-Enfield (SMLE) No. 1 MK III* Rifle, made in 1949 at the Ishapore Rifle Factory, north of Calcutta. The Lee-Enfield is a bolt-action, magazine fed, repeating rifle that served as the main firearm used by the military forces of the British Empire and Commonwealth during the first half of the 20th century.
The British Army adopted the .303 Caliber SMLE No. 1 Mk III in 1904 and the Indian Army soon followed. The Ishapore Rifle Factory began manufacturing this weapon in 1909 using British machines and the same specifications followed by the Royal Small Arms Factory. At its production peak, Ishapore made 600,000 SMLE No. 1 rifles during World War II.
The overall condition is very good. Very good black finish. Strong action. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The numbers on the receiver and muzzle cap match but the bolt does not. Solid stock showing the wear you would expect.
